Global Settings



Go to the 'Settings' menu to access your global settings: 'Global Block Page', 'Global Default Policy' and 'Global Domains'. Global settings are applied to all your customers by default.

Global Block Page

Go to 'Settings' > 'Global Block Page' to manage your global block page settings. A block page is the web page that displays when a user tries to access a website that they are not permitted to view because of their policy settings.

Block pages are customizable in Web Protection. Follow the steps below to edit your global block page, which is the default block page given to a customer.

Note: A customer admin can choose to edit their block page from the customer view.


As you edit, you will see your changes in the preview window:

  • Go to 'Settings' > 'Global Block Page'.
  • Click the logo icon to upload your own custom logo.
  • Click into Page Title, Access Denied Message and Footer to add your own custom text.
  • Click 'Save Changes' to save.
  • Click 'Reset' to reset the block page to the default settings (see sample image above).

Edit your Global Default Policy


Policies include several settings, but mainly determine the categories of website a user can access.

Note: Updates to the global default policy are applied to new customers added after updates are made. Existing customers are not affected.

Customers can edit the applied default policy at the customer level.


Follow these steps to edit your global default policy.

  • Go to 'Settings' > 'Global Default Policy'.
  • Filtering Options:
    • Safe Search: Safe Search filters out explicit or potentially offensive search results on Google, Bing and YouTube and helps avoid most adult content search results. Select 'Safe Search' to enable.
    • Unclassified Traffic: Unclassified traffic is generally traffic from websites that are new and are not yet assigned to a category in the central web categories database. Select 'Allow Unclassified Traffic' to enable.
  • Content Filtering:
Policies are configured to allow or block access to particular categories. A category is a list of websites that are grouped together based on their dominant content. For example, Education, Alcohol, Finance and so on.

Your default policy allows you to select one of four content filtering levels (category groupings) - Essential (default), Enhanced, Optimum, or Custom. Hover over Essential, Enhanced or Optimum to see the categories they include.

Note: You can apply a different content filtering level to each customer as they are added to WebTitan.

To create your own Custom content filtering level:
    • Select 'Customise' and the 'Custom Content Filter' window displays.
    • Select the categories you want to include for your custom level.

      Note: You must select or unselect at least one category in this window to save your custom content filtering level.
    • Select 'Save Changes'.
  • Select 'Save Changes'. If you navigate away without saving, any changes will be discarded.

Add your Global Domains

Go to 'Settings' > 'Global Domains' to view and manage your global allowed and blocked domains. Domains on this list are allowed or blocked for all customers.

Note: Global allow and block list entries are inherited by a customer. However, any customer-level allow and block list entries will take precedence.

For example, if you add www.example.com as an allowed global domain and a customer then adds www.example.com as a blocked domain, the domain is blocked for that customer. 

  • Allowed Domains: If you block access to a particular category, e.g. Spyware and Malicious Sites, all websites within that category will be blocked. However, you can allow access to a website that is included in a blocked category by adding it as an Allowed Domain.
  • Blocked Domains: If you allow access to a category, e.g. Art, all websites within that category will be allowed. However, you can block access to a website that is included in an allowed category by adding it as a Blocked Domain.

To add an allowed or blocked domain:
  • Select Add and choose to Allow a Domain or Block a Domain.
  • Complete the fields in the pop-up:
    • Domain: Enter the domain you want to allow or block.

      Top level domain entries (TLDs) are supported. For example, to allow or block all domains from a particular country enter the TLD for that country. For example, ru.

      Caution is advised when adding TLDs as you may allow or block more domains than expected. For example, adding com as a blocked TLD will block all domains ending in .com

      Note: Only enter the TLD. Wildcards (*) and periods (.) are not required. For example:
    • Include subdomains: If your domain is example.com and you select this option, then all domains that end in example.com will also be allowed or blocked, e.g. support.example.com and products.example.com.

      Include subdomains: must be selected to save this entry if a TLD is entered in the Domain: field
    • Log requests for reporting: Deselect to prevent requests from going to the logger for reporting.
    • Comments: Optional comments about this allow or block domain.
  • Select 'Allow Domain' or 'Block Domain'.

Importing Global Domains

Follow the steps below to bulk import global allowed and blocked domains into Web Protection from a CSV file.

  • Go to 'Settings' > 'Global Domains'.
  • Select 'Import' at the top of the 'Domains' table and the 'Import Domain' window displays.
  • Select 'Import File' and choose either 'Allowed Domains' or 'Blocked Domains'.
  • Browse to locate your CSV file and click 'Open'.

The CSV file must have a single domain per line and follow the following format:
    • Domain: Domain name, in a valid format, that you want to allow or block (required).
    • Subdomains: TRUE or FALSE (default: TRUE).
    • Log Requests: TRUE or FALSE (default: TRUE)
    • Comment: Optional comment field.

Note that:
    • Duplicate entries invalidate an import.
    • Imported domains take precedence. For example:

      If a domain is currently allowed and is then imported as a blocked domain, the blocked domain takes precedence.

      If a domain is currently blocked and is then imported as an allowed domain, the allowed domain takes precedence.
